I'd like to thank Eileen of Samsung Canada for providing us with the Yepp YP-55I MP3 Player for review.
Mp3 players have come a long way from the past to the present. In the beginning most manufacturers focused on incorporating the new technology into their cd players and on creating solid state players. Fast forward to what's available today and the selection can be over whelming. Not only can you store and play back MP3's, some players can also be used for data storage, incorporate FM radio, equalizers, recorders, and many other features.
Today we take a look at one of these "option packed" MP3 Players from the well known brand name Samsung with their Yepp YP-55I MP3 Player.
The Yepp-YP-55i comes complete with instruction manual, driver and application CD, Earbuds, neck strap, USB cable, carrying case, and a nifty little gadget that plugs straight into the player, so you can plug it directly into a USB port with out a cable.
Now the 55i not only plays MP3's it can also play WMA files. But that's just scratching the surface of the 55i's capabilities. It also has an integrated FM radio, a built in voice recorder, 3d digital sound processing, can be used as a removable storage device, and the firmware can be upgraded when new firmware is available. This could add features like new codecs, or other added functions.
The Yepp has an interesting tube like design and is a little larger that a cigarette lighter. The display and controls are very well laid out and has an 'intuitive' feel when you use it. What i mean is even with out the user manual i was able to get the player to not only play MP3s, but also switch to the FM radio, and even play with the equalizer. That's a good thing for all you 'read the manual' haters. :)
As for storage capacity the 55i can handle 192 megabytes of storage. That's good for around three hours of music, and the battery life is good for up to 15 hours.
The controls are setup straight forward. You have your volume up and down, with the mode button in the middle of it. Selecting forward or back is accomplished by 'twisting' the end of the 55i forward or back. You've got your play/pause button, and a hold feature that disables all other buttons. Next we have the record 'on' button, and the WOW button. The WOW button is an interesting and cool feature.
The WOW button allows you
to select between various sound enhancements. First up we have SRS (sound retrieval system). Basically this will give a more '3D' sound to your music. next selection is Trubass, which adds a bass boost. The last selection, and my favorite, is simple named WOW which incorporates both SRS and Trubass together.
