I'd like to thank Elaine of Coolmax for providing us with the Taurus 140mm Power supply for review.
Today we take a look at the latest power supply from Coolmax the Taurus 140mm Silent Switching PSU. The unusual thing about this power supply is it comes with not your typical 80mm or 120mm fan, but a massive 140mm fan!
Inside the box the power supply comes equipped with various extra wire attachments for use with AMD or Intel motherboards, and power cord. Our test unit is the 500 Watt version though other wattages are available; 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, and 550 Watts.
As a precaution the Taurus has over voltage protection that provides short circuit protection on all output levels.
Basically the Taurus 140mm Silent Switching Power supply is an improved version of Coolmax's Taurus line. One of the first very noticeable changes is the huge 140mm fan that now replaces the old 120mm. Up till now i didn't even know they made 140mm fans!
Moving to the back of the unit we have the plug-in jack, on/off switch, fan speed selector, and voltage selector switch. On the previous Taurus model the fan speed controller was a little black switch, but on the Taurus 140mm it's been replaced with hefty rheostat switch. This rheostat is a big improvement on the old, and has a nice stiff 'notching' action.
The fan speed controller offers you four choices to choose from: low, medium, high and auto. The auto mode lets the Taurus select which speed is appropriate depending on the temperature.
Features
-The power supply is a minimum of 60% efficient under typical load.
-The "Energy Star" efficiency of the power supply is a minimum of 50% when the AC input power is 60W.
-The power supply DC outputs are enabled with an active-low, TTL-compatible signal ("PS-ON").
(with the exception of +5 VSB which is always available)
-When PS-On is pulled to TTL low, the DC outputs are enabled.
-When PS-ON is pulled to TTL high or open-circuited, the DC outputs are disabled.
-PS-ON may be active by either electronic means or a mechanical switch.
-The output voltage overshoot upon the application or removal of the input voltage is less than 10%
-Test to be performed at nominal input voltage.
-Maintain output regulation despite a loss of a minimum of 16ms while under full load
