The bottom of the Smart Drive 2002 has six screws to take out before you get access to the interior of the enclosure.
One thing you'll have to do to install this unit is to plug your ide cable and the molex power extender to your hard drive first before placing the bottom plate on and fastening down the six screws. This has to be done because the interior foam will expand and block the enclosure holes, so you got to press them down with the cable plugins.
The enclosure is compatible with both your standard parallel ATA and serial ATA hard drives. We will be testing the unit out with a western digital Caviar 40 gig 7200 RPM hard drive.
Once the hard drive was installed all we had left to do for installation was to find a free 5.25" bay and remove its bezel plate. Next we slid the Smart Drive 2002 into the bay and it was a perfect fit. Fastened the screws to the unit and the bay rails and we were done.
Once our test computer was up and running, there was a reduction in hard drive noise especially when under use with no perceivable "drive chatter". I was surprised actually how noisy my drive was before i installed the Smart Drive and found out what was making a rattling noise in my case.
We used a thermal probe on the hard drive before and after to see if the enclosure raised the temperature at all and we got the following results.
Before: 33'C
With: 36'C
As you can see we got a three degree difference in temperature, which isn't to bad for a hard drive all bundled up in a box.
The main benefit of the Smart Drive 2002 is it's a great way to silence that pesky hard drive of yours. If you're building a silent system you might want to check the Smart drive 2002 out.
