Above we have a shot of the easy to navigate remote control that's included with the unit. It has all your standard buttons and menu navigation buttons along with a few specialty buttons like: subtitle, angle, zoom, repeat, mute, and menu display.
The remote is powered by two double A batteries, and two were included in the box.
Testing:
To test the unit we burnt a bunch of CD's, DVD-r and DVD+r's with movies in Divx 3,4, and 5 formats. We also did the same for the audio but with mp3s instead.
VIDEO:
First off we were able to play all versions of Divx from 3-5 with no problems, and the picture was quite good. In general all these Divx files were at a bit rate of 1100 or more, though we did have some cartoons between 400-800 that looked just as good as a regular TV broadcast.
We also tried Xvid files but some didn't work along with GMC and QP.
AUDIO:
Moving along to audio, the DVP 642 handled the mp3s like a charm. We were even able to make a huge DVD disk full of MP3s that came to about 80 albums!
FUNCTIONALITY:
Using the DVP 642 is very intuitive, every aspect of this player is menu driven. You simple scroll up and down or left or right to select an option or a selection and then press the OK button (think of it as Return key like on a computer keyboard).
One of the cooler aspects of this DVD/Divx player is Divx files only need be burnt as a data disk. There's no need to burn it as some Video CD or such, like some other DivX capable players.
All in all this is one cool little player that can pretty much play anything you can throw at it. Not to mention it's incredibly affordable. This is truly a Divx fan's dream machine.
