One of the major eye catching features of these headphones are the speakers themselves. Instead of the standard round look of typical headphone speakers, zalman's headphone speakers are a long rounded rectangle shape. I assume that there are actually 3 speakers on each ear, thus the need for the elongation of the headphone speakers.
Real Surround Sound Headphones are supposed to produces a real surround field comparable to a 5.1 surround home stereo system.
They achieve this by using enhanced spatial and realistic effects by separating front, rear, and center speakers.
To test the headphones out i played various DVDs including Independence Day and the Matrix, audio cds, and the following video games Quake 3 Arena, and Unreal Tournament 2003. As for the soundcard i used the one built into my A7N8X deluxe motherboard.
I started with playing audio cds and the headphones produced good bass and the high were quite nice. There was little or no distortion even when played at loud volumes. Now i didn't expect any real change in sound when listening to audio Cds for as far as i know audio albums are recorded in stereo and not in surround sound.
Next i moved on to movies choosing movies with a lot of action. My selections: The matrix and Independence Day. I was quite impressed with the results and i did feel like had a set of speakers all around me.
As for gaming i found that the headphones really shined here. While playing Unreal Tournament 2003 i was able to pin point my opponent's locations easier than with my old headphones. It's kind of neat when you can hear someone coming up behind you.
Zalman's Real Surround Sound Headphones are definitely cool. If you want surround sound without waking up the neighbors you might want to check them out.
Pros:
- surround sound
