Like some of the previous versions of the Volcano series, you can setup the fan to be used in three ways; Full power, temperature sensor, and manually with a speed controller. One new thing to this setup is thermaltake finally abandoned the cheap plastic-speed-controller-on-a-wire thing for a solid PCI slot fan speed controller.
So you don't want to reach behind your computer every time you want to speed up the fan? Well included in the package is a 3.5" front bezel with a fan speed controller knob.
Test System
AMD XP 2600+ 333 MHz (AIUHB)
Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev 2.0
Corsair PC2700 XMS 512 MEGS
Beantech igloo 7 aluminum case
Maxtor Diamond 9 30 gig harddrive.
To calculate the idle temperatures, I gave the computer 10 minutes on its own before recording the temperature down.
Next, using Sandra burn in wizard I allowed it to run 30 minutes and recorded the readings.
The performance of the Extreme Volcano 12 was very good and on a high fan setting it out performed the Silent Boost Heatsink.
The fan sound is quiet on low and a little whinny on high but that's to be expected running at a top speed of 5500 RPM.
All in all this a well rounded package and i especially like the choice of fan controls for front or back applications.
