I'd like to thank Sharon of Evercool for providing us with the Extended Cooling System for review.
Today we take a look at Evercool's 'Extended Cooling System' that claims to increase your CPU's life. Evercool has come up with a way to keep your CPU fan spinning and continue cooling for five minutes even after you shut your computer off.
The Extended Cooling System which from now on i will call ECS, consists of the main unit, two fan wire extensions, and motherboard power supply add-on adapter.
The basic concept of the ECS is the fact that when you turn your computer off, the CPU fan turns off while the cpu is still hot. The ECS keeps the CPU fan spinning for an additional five minutes.
The fan will spin slower though because it will be powered by five volts only instead of 12 volts.
The effect keeps cpu constantly cool.
To install the ECS, you first have to pull out your motherboard power cord and add the extension adapter and plug it all back in. The extension adapter looks the same as your motherboard power cord except for the added 5 volt wire plug.
The 5 volt plug in wire goes to the ECS unit which will detect if the computer is on or off.
Then it simply of matter of plugging in your CPU fan to the ECS and then using the provided fan extention wire to connect back to your motherboards cpu power socket.
Installation took matter of minutes and so i proceeded power up and then to turn my computer off to see the results. Well the CPU fan did continue to spin and the ECS's indicator light had turned from green to red which indicates the computer is off and the unit is working.
Now the bottom line is do you need this? Well i've had some computers for 4 or 5 years and the CPU still worked. By that amount of time technology will be way ahead and you'll probably need to upgrade anyways.
On the other hand, if your an overclocker this might be a different case altogether. Overclocking can push a CPU's temperatures quite high and usually shortens the life of a CPU. It can also void your CPU's warranty.
Since my system is overclocked i like the idea of a little extra insurance.
Pros:
-Easy setup
-Prolongs CPU Life
Cons:
-Might not be neccessary for the average user
