Installation was fairly easy, though I did have to remove the fan off the heatsink first so I could fasten the retention clip to the motherboard. The retention clip on this unit is one of the best that I’ve seen. I never once felt like I was going to gouge the motherboard with the screw driver.
Shots of the rheostat and thermal sensor.
Testing:
Test System
AMD XP 2600+ 333 MHz (AIUHB)
Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev 2.0
Corsair PC2700 XMS 512 MEGS
Beantech igloo 7 aluminum case
Maxtor Diamond 9 30 gig harddrive.
To calculate the idle temperatures, I gave each setting 10 minutes before recording the temperature down.
Next, using Sandra burn in wizard I allowed it to run 30 minutes on each setting. I've included some other heatsinks for comparison. On high the fan and heatsink performed well. But as for the lowest setting, I was getting concerned as the temperature seemed to keep going up and up.
The Thermaltake Volcano 9 is a great choice for those looking for a low noise solution, without skimping on heat dissipation.
One suggestion if you choose to use the manual temperature control, don't use it on lowest setting.
Pros:
- 3 methods of using the fan
- Copper insert
- Good retention clip
- Fan guard included
