The ports are attached to a 3 foot cable that plugs into your various ports from your sound card, videocard or motherboard.
The picture above is a shot of the optional dual USB port adapter.
Here's a picture of the cables plugged into their respective ports. The cables are pulled through an unused pci port below the soundcard and are held by the special bracket that provides enough clearance for the cables.
Notice on the right of the special bracket is a 1/8 inch jack. This jack is connected to the headphone cable. The jack allows you to plug in your speakers in the back and still use the front headphone port with your headphones.
All in all the FrontX is well designed and is a great way to give you easier accessibility and upgradeablity to your ports.
